Sondors Smart Step Review: A Perfect Blend of Style and Functionality

Embarking on the journey to find the perfect e-bike took me not just months, but perhaps years. I was in search of a ride that would not only fill me with pride but also fit snugly into my Kia Soul or be easily mounted on the back of my RV. The criteria were specific: a foldable design for efficient storage, yet equipped with large tires for those sandy escapades in Mexico. My budget was not unlimited, and I desired a model with a concealed battery, to subtly keep the fact of my pedaling assistance under wraps. After an exhaustive quest, pouring over countless reviews, the Sondors Smart Step electric bike emerged as my chosen steed. My decision has led to no regrets; I have grown quite fond of my bike.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an E-bike

9. Cost:  For me, it’s always about the price!  I want the most bang for my buck, don’t we all these days!  Considering what’s on offer, it can be so hard to choose. 

Every single one of these factors played a part in my choice.  I felt like this was absolutely the best bike for me, and when I bought it in early 2020, I managed to get it for under $1200CDN.  I was really lucky to hop across the border to pick it up a few days before Covid shut the world down.

My Sondors Smart Step Review

My vision for the perfect e-bike was one that could easily fold for transport and storage, yet I wasn’t keen on the smaller-tired models frequently spotted in RV parks. While those compact bikes are perfectly fine, and quite popular among many, I feared the playful jests from friends if I were to navigate the streets of Kelowna on one. I imagine a time may come when lifting my Sondors becomes too much, and at that juncture, I’ll likely join the ranks of small, folding, tiny-tired bike owners.

What I truly desired was an e-bike that embodied the spirit of a cruiser, equipped with robust, fat tires for universal terrain adaptability. Spending winters in Mexico means I need a bike that’s as comfortable on paved roads as it is on sandy lanes. It’s not about beach rides but rather embracing the flexibility those big tires offer.

The available accessories also caught my eye, and I found myself adding both the fenders and the rack and bag kit to my setup. Residing in rainy British Columbia, Canada, for at least six months of the year, the fenders became indispensable. During the Covid shutdown, I lived atop a significant hill in Nanaimo, providing ample opportunity to truly appreciate the capabilities of this bike. Please note that as of 2024 the company has gone out of business. It will be harder to find parts now.

SONDORS Smart Step Ltd – Assembly

The arrival of the Sondors Smart Step e-bike in a box, unassembled, initially set off alarms for someone with a slight aversion to mechanical tasks like myself. The prospect was daunting, yet, bolstered by the positive experiences of other reviewers, I believed I could surmount the challenge. The company’s website hosts an array of instructional videos, offering a step-by-step guide to assembly, which proved to be a treasure trove of assistance.

The process kicked off with me unboxing and laying out all the pieces: the bike frame, front wheel, handlebars, pedals, and seat, ensuring nothing was missing. With the assembly instructions as my roadmap, I found them to be remarkably clear, dispelling any concerns about comprehension.

I began with attaching the handlebars to the frame, securing them with the screws and bolts provided. Following that, I mounted the front wheel onto the fork, affixed the brake calipers, and tightened the nuts and bolts to secure the wheel. The next step involved attaching the pedals to the crank arms, cautiously matching the right pedal with the right side, and the left pedal with the left side.

After installing the seat, adjusting its height, and securing it in place, I conducted a final check on all bolts and nuts to ensure they were firmly tightened. A preliminary test ride confirmed that everything was assembled correctly.

Reflecting on the experience, the assembly of the SONDORS Smart Step Ltd turned out to be far more straightforward than anticipated. For those who might feel apprehensive about putting together their e-bike, I can reassure you that with a little patience and adherence to the provided instructions, the task is quite manageable.

Currently, without a towed vehicle for my Class A motorhome, this e-bike becomes my primary means of transportation at times. A: According to the manufacturer, the bike can be folded in just seconds and can fit in the trunk of most cars. According to me, who actually owns one, it’s a bit awkward to fold up if you’re not very tall, but you get used to it. I use a bungee cord to hold it closed when I’m lifting it.

Q: What size is it?
A: The frame of this bike is 17.75“. The standover height is 20.5″. The seat height is 31.5″-41.5”. The folded dimensions are 38.5″ L x 13.5″ W x 36.6″ H.
I’m 5’6 with pretty short legs, I find this bike to be hard to stay seated and be stopped except at the lowest seat height. For anyone more than a few inches shorter than me it might not be the best selection.  I have also heard it’s not suitable for tall people over 6′.

Drawbacks and Negative Reviews

My acquisition of an electric bike was driven by the desire to incorporate more exercise into my routine, with the added benefit of assistance on the numerous hills present in my hometown. I was not in search of a bike that would completely alleviate the effort required from me; rather, I sought one that would aid me during the more strenuous segments of my rides. The Sondors Smart Step review shows it has fulfilled this requirement to perfection. It may not boast the highest power output, but for my specific needs, it has proven to be precisely what I was looking for.

It would be advantageous if the bicycle remained securely locked in its folded position to simplify the processes of lifting and loading, eliminating the necessity for additional implements. At the moment, a bungee cord acts as a temporary fix for this issue. The bike’s considerable weight has occasionally led to difficulties in handling, prompting considerations of unconventional solutions, such as the addition of training wheels, to mitigate its unwieldiness.
